Abstract
The two dominant natural hazards at the HGP-A site are earthquake and lava flow. Between 1834 and 1978, 93 earthquakes likely produced significant ground shaking at the site. A seismic risk assessment of these data was made for the site. The design peak ground acceleration for primary components of the plant is 0.41g based on a 10% probability of exceedance in the projected 30-year life of the facility. The study of the historical data on the occurrence of lava flows in the North Rift Zone which contains the HGP-A site showed that two cycles of lava flow activity can be identified. Lava flows covered most of the rift zone in the period 1700 to 1840. There are no identified important lava flows between 1840 and 1955. The second cycle of lava flows began in 1955 and continued in 1960, 1961 to 1969, 1969 to 1974, and 1977. The second cycle of lava flow has its source apparently in a similar location to those in the earlier identified cycle up to a distance of about 15 km west of the site. Since 1955, the origin of the lava flows for a distance of about 15 km west of the site lies on a line south of the earlier flows and the axis of the origin of these flows more or less passes directly through the site.
