The Belinda Aquino Phillippine Studies Collection supports the University of Hawai'i Center for Philippine Studies. Materials about the Philippines and Filipinos in the social sciences and humanities, regardless of place of publication, are actively collected. Though the materials selected are primarily in English, as it is presently the language of printed mass media, academia and government, Filipino, Ilokano and Spanish materials are also acquired selectively. Belinda Aquino, a civil right’s activist and outspoken critic of President Ferdinand Marcos, was a Political Science Professor and the Founding Director of the Center of Philippine Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. The Center was established in 1975 after an act of the Hawai'i State Legislature established the Center to recognize the contribution of Filipinos in Hawai'i. As of 2021, there are thirty-six Philippine-related courses at UHM, which contributes to the retention and record breaking graduation rates of Filipino students since 2018.
