Abstract: This article describes the importance of early identification of hearing loss in newborns, the current status of newborn hearing screening in the United States, and the leadership that Hawaii has contributed to that effort. Described are events that may help the nation reach the Year 2010 Health Goals for newborn hearing screening, identification, and intervention.
