Selected resources from an architectural survey of Il Borro, Italy in 1989 by a team of University of California at Berkeley students documenting and analyzing buildings and the built environment for architectural characteristics, historical significance, structural condition, and relationship to the surrounding context. "The history of Il Borro dates back to Roman times, when a strategic fortress stood. In the Middle Ages, the area was the scene of conflicts between Arezzo and Florence. The castle passed in 1254 to the Dal Borro, who ruled it until 1344, then it was ceded to Florence. It returned to the Dal Borro family in 1644, with the marquis title conferred by Grand Duke Ferdinand II. After a period of decline, in 1823 it passed to Count Della Torre Hoffer Valsassina, who improved its land and the conditions of the peasants. In 1903, Borro was purchased by Prince Emanuele Filiberto, and, after historical and social events, in 1990 it became the property of the Ferruccio Ferragamo family, which restored the hamlet in keeping with traditions." (adapted from The Story of Il Borro). For an overview of the subsequent restoration of Il Borro in 1993 by the Ferragamo family and Il Borro today, see the Il Borro website.
