dc.description This manuscript is found in the Samuel H. Elbert papers, held in the Pacific Collection at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The finding aid to the papers is here: <a href="" target+"blank"></a>. It is written in English and Northern and Southern Marquesan languages, although most of the stories from the north are provided in English. This manuscript was likely written in the late 1930's.
dc.description.abstract From Elbertʻs introduction: "This material was collected from the islands of Tahuata, Hivaʻoa, Nukuhiva and Ua Pou in the Marquesas group from March 1934 to May 1935. Sometimes the legends and chants were copies from old notebooks written down by the Marquesans themselves, but more often they were told to me directly by old men or women."
