dc.descriptionThis folder contains a speech delivered by Senator Daniel K. Inouye for the Japanese American Memorial to American Patriotism on June 29, 2001. In his speech, Senator Daniel K. Inouye shares his personal anecdotes of fighting alongside the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, in order to rescue the 1st Battalion of the 141st Regiment of the 36th Division, who had been counter-attacked by German Forces on October 25, 1944. In addition, he explains that while the first two rescue attempts had failed, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team had continued to engage in war until November 8, 1944, when the German line was finally broken after a long and arduous battle and the “Lost Battalion” was rescued. This folder also contains Senator Daniel K. Inouye’s speech for a dinner he had attended celebrating the completion of the memorial to Japanese-American Patriotism during World War II. This speech outlines the discrimination and alienation that the Japanese-Americans faced after being forced into internment camps following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, in this speech, also outlines the circumstances and details of the war, and in the end commends the Japanese-Americans in Hawai'i who had volunteered to serve in the war despite the widespread discrimination against them.
