Abstract
Description
Scale approximately 1:28,000,000. 1 map ; 16.5 × 23 cm, on sheet 26.5 x 34.5 cm. Nicholas Sanson (1600-1667) was a French geographer who created the "Sanson projection" (sinusoidal projection). The shape of Japan, stretching in a straight line from east to west, is thought to be based on a map of Japan by L. Teixeira included in the 1595 expanded edition of A. Ortelius's "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum." The model for China is based on a map of China by L. J. de Barbuda included in the 1584 edition of the same Ortelius atlas. The absence of the name of Sichuan Province, and the area around it being designated Yunnan, is also a reference to the Barbuda map.
