Abstract

Description

Contains testimony on the cultural significance and preservation of Heʻeia Fishpond and its surroundings, recounting its legendary history and the impact of Western property concepts on Native Hawaiian rights to fishponds and sea fisheries. Emphasizes the decline in fishpond numbers and advocates for the conservation of Heʻeia Fishpond as a crucial part of Hawaiian culture, urging support for preservation efforts to safeguard it for future generations. IMPORTANT* – All three testimonies in the folder are relatively similar to one another, each exhibiting slight changes in choice of language. One of the testimonies also include hand written notes that act as corrections. In addition, Marion Kelly references her testimony as “SR 136, Proposing the Conservation of Heʻeia Fishpond and the Adjacent Areas,” but per the Legislative Bureau Library, it is listed as, “SR136, Requesting That The Heeia Fishpond Area Be Reclassified Conservation.” There is no date attached to Marion Kellyʻs Testimony as well, but was located with guidance from the Legislative Bureau Librarian.
