Abstract

Prepared by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with Division of Water and Land Development Department of Land and Natural Resources, State of Hawaii. This study was begun in mid-1971 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Water and Land Development, Department of Land and Natural Resources, State of Hawaii. The purpose of the study was to identify present ground-water quality conditions, both natural and as affected by usage, to show readily identifiable changes in quality with time and usage, and to relate water-quality conditions to the development of ground-water supplies. The study included a thorough research of all published data regarding chloride levels and complete chemical analyses for ground water in Hawaii; acquisition of data from local agencies collecting ground-water quality information; compilation of extensive unpublished water-quality data in U.S. Geological Survey files; coding of all data, where possible, for use in computer storage and retrieval systems; analysis of the collected and compiled data; and development of preliminary conclusions regarding the effects of pumpage and land use on water quality. The report presents the results of a 2-year study of ground-water quality for the entire State of Hawaii.
