Letter to Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy from Ernest Besig, Director, American Civil Liberties Union, Northern California Branch, expressing personal protest against General Richardson's defiance of the federal courts and calling for the relief of his command (Commanding General, U.S. Armed Forces, Central Pacific Area). Attached are a memorandum for Mr. McCloy from Colonel William P. Scobey submitting a draft press release on the War Department's attitude on the Richardson-Metzger matter (in Hawaii) and commenting on the draft's contents (draft not included); and the issued War Department press release entitled "Martial Law Rule in Hawaii Erroneously Construed By Judge."
