Abstract

"Moving Forestry and Wildlife into the 80's is a very appropriate theme for this year's conference. This is now the second year that the Hawaii Forestry and Wildlife Conferences have been combined. I am sure this will help in the better management of Hawaii's Natural Resources. As we look into the 80's, it is obvious that the challenges we face here in Hawaii will be increasing. It is especially important that we focus on and provide the input to the Renewable Resources Research Needs which will be addressed in the panel presentations this afternoon and with finding solutions to our resource management problems. As a State, we are faced with many major obstacles, including major shortages of fossil fuels and water, increasing populations, high rates of inflation, and increased livelihood of major impacts on our Forest Environments, both urban and rural. I encourage you as Foresters, Wildlife Biologists, Soil Scientists, Resource Managers, and land owners, and other participants, to integrate your efforts, coordinate, and cooperate to the fullest to accomplish the natural resources goals both in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. I appreciate your invitation to speak at your conference, and regret I am unable to join you. Aloha and best wishes for a most successful conference."
