Abstract
Description
Scale 1:4,000,000. 1 map : color ; 67 x 74 cm, on sheet 79.5 x 79.5 cm. Soviet WWII military map of Manchuria with a two-layer handwritten key attached in the upper right corner of the map. The map was printed in August 1945 at the Leningrad factory ("Zakaz 62 VIII-45-L" bottom right corner within the map border). There are printed details on cities, airports and areas usable for airplane landings, rivers, and different types of roads suitable for army needs. There are hand-drawn ink and pencil additions showing sixteen Kwantung Army fortified areas and information on the numbers of Mengjiang forces. On the second handwritten list there appears to be information about Soviet army forces. The map was treated by the UH Library Preservation Department and digitized. A pretreatment image of the map can be seen below.

For the access copy, the two-layer handwritten key was digitally removed and made available as a separate image. No portion of the map proper nor the map key data was altered. The map is not mentioned in any of the major Russian library databases, and is most likely a restricted/secret staff map used in planning the Manchuria operation. The Manchuria operation was quick, taking twelve days for the Soviet army to invade the puppet state of Manchukuo. The map is a strategic overview of the Japanese, Mengjiang, and Manchukuo armies situated in Manchuria in early August. For more on the invasion see the Wikipedia article Soviet invasion of Manchuria.
