Abstract

Description

6 pages : maps ; 28 x 22 cm. "Although Korea had been under the control of China from 1637 until about 1890, the Chinese did not take an active interest in conducting topographic surveys or compiling maps. The first serious cartographic effort in Korea was the compilation of hydrographic charts on selected areas by the British. The charts of Korea produced from 1867 to 1891 by the Japanese Hydrographic Office were based primarily on these British charts. From 1869 until 1945, the mapping of Korea was accomplished primarily by the Japanese and since 1945 by the United States." (Introduction)
