The map is color-coded to represent political and geographical features, territories under the control of the Soviet Union (USSR), foreign states, provinces in China, and areas under Japanese occupation. The legend includes urban centers by population size, capital cities, Soviet administrative centers; the classification of roads, railway types, naval bases, and major seaports; and foreign concessions and settlements and treaty ports. The Great Wall of China is prominently featured.
