For the purpose of evaluating the geothermal potential of a prospect Southeast of Pahoa, Puna District, Hawaii, a high gain (50-500K) , high-frequency (5-30hz) seismic array with a detection threshold below magnitude 0.5 was operated for thirteen days between December 27, 1974 and January 9, 1975. Forty-two local microearthquakes were recorded, nineteen of which were locatable. The majority of located events were placed seaward of the East Rift of Kilauea Volcano near previously recorded seismic activity. The level of seismicity recorded here. agrees with the seismicity reported by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The location of these events and first motion studies suggest a seaward dipping normal fault along the East Rift. A Poisson's ratio anomaly appears to be associated with the active area. The data supports the contention that this area has a high potential for production of geothermal steam.
