Abstract

Description

Letter to Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson from James Omura, Executive Director, Pacific Coast Evacuee Placement Bureau, Denver, Colorado, protesting the formation of a special combat unit of American Japanese volunteers and instead calling for Nisei inclusion in the universal draft. Attached are subsequent correspondence from Mr. Omura to the Secretary of War; copies of clippings of published articles and letters related to this exchange; letters of reply to Mr. Omura from the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War; and a 1944 memorandum for the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1 from Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy questioning the current induction process of Japanese Americans into the armed forces for replacements for the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Combat Team, instead of a general assignment policy.
