Abstract
From Elbertʻs introduction: "This material was collected from the islands of Tahuata, Hivaʻoa, Nukuhiva and Ua Pou in the Marquesas group from March 1934 to May 1935. Sometimes the legends and chants were copies from old notebooks written down by the Marquesans themselves, but more often they were told to me directly by old men or women."
