In March 1882, the sugar growers of the Kingdom of Hawaii met at the Chamber of Commerce in Honolulu and formed The Planters’ Labor and Supply Company. The Planters’ Monthly was the official journal of this organization.

“This periodical was established in 1882 for the special object of discussing all matters affecting the planting and agricultural interests of the Kingdom, and for furnishing such information, derived from local and foreign sources, as might be of service to these and kindred industrial interests of the country. Its sphere should and does include every topic affecting the growth and prosperity of the country, quite as much as that of the daily or weekly newspapers, not omitting what are termed political questions.” (Volume 4, Number 9)
